This was the back view of a big envelope that arrived from the Admissions office of the only college that my daughter, a high school senior, applied to. It has seemed quite probable that this was going to happen, but as the many weeks stretched on, and I kept reading these scary accounts of more people applying to college than ever before, and and and… well, I have been pacing around and chewing my fingernails.
So the envelope arrived while she was at crew practice, and we called and left her a voicemail and texted her, but then we had to go to a meeting before she got home. We didn’t open the envelope, but of course that big red YES! spoke volumes. We called her from the parking lot after the meeting.
“Honey, we’re so excited for you!”
“Yeah, well, it’s okay, I got on the wait list.”
Long pause. Heart palpitations. Wild-eyed look at husband, mouthing “WAIT LIST?!”
She continued. “Yeah, the letter says, you’re a very strong candidate, but we have received a large number of applications from equally strong applicants, and we’ve placed you on a waiting list. I guess I should call the coach and see if she can appeal my application.”
I just stood there, dumfounded.
Then: “MOM! You believed me?!” and, “If I had really gotten on the wait list, I would be BAWLING my head off!”
That is what they refer to in New Jersey as “busting my chops.” The little stinker!
She didn’t really have a lot of doubts herself, but it’s great to have the waiting over, and to know it’s finally Officially official. Whew.
We brought home a bunch of red flowers, roses and Gerber daisies and berries, because it looks like our future is going to be pretty red.

Congratulations! I love the big red YES on the envelope; I remember trying to discern the answer by the thickness of the envelope (bad news came in skinny ones…).
